Extra Cred: Television News, And Public Opinion :D

Television News has been a huge influence on the public for decades. They have been broadcasting stories that have helped us and also change our views on certain political issues. Although they may change our views, or influence us to feel or think a certain way, the way they influence the viewer is according to the viewers you are talking about. Television news has helped put a face on the issues that we have had over the years. Without the influence of television news we would not be the nation we are today.

Viewers of TV news are influenced by the negativity. I feel as if the degree is bad. Once the news airs, the most that you see/hear is violence; negativity is beyond another chapter, because its always a death, kidnapping, or accident. The news is controlling us especially with negativity. That is all they show us and we just consume the negativity, in which we try to prevent certain situations such as: robberies, killing, rape, assault, etc. Viewers are also influenced in politics by their decisions, candidate’s elections, and laws. They can influence you to believe one political view over another with strong arguments regarding to the political subject.

When you talk about how viewers evaluate what they have seen on the news, it is all according to which class of viewers you are referring to. Your college-educated viewers are more likely to evaluate what they see and hear and know if it’s true or made into something that it is not. The viewers who are not college educated are more likely to be swayed by the news and believe the propaganda. It is also according to what the news it reporting about. If they were reporting about the wars in the Middle East than a lot of the non-college educated viewers would be able to tell the truth from lies. This is because most of the non-college educated viewers have either served in the military or have parents or even grandparents that have served. Then when it comes to politics your college-educated viewers understand more of the truth and lies that come with the news about it.

Media culture best explains the way that TV news influences public opinion. “Public opinion is the aggregate of individual attitudes or beliefs. Public opinion can also be defined as the complex collection of opinions of many different people and the sum of all their views, or as a single opinion held by an individual about a social or political topic.” The most popular stations give off the biggest impact such as: CnnCBSABC, and FOX. Media culture is focused more on receiving viewer’s attention. The only way they can receive that is by sending out captivating information to grab people’s attention; some of the topics catch our attention in which sometimes viewers get so deeply in tuned with it until they end up being controlled.

Television News has been a huge influence on the public for decades. They have been broadcasting stories that have helped us and also change our views on certain political issues. Throughout media culture, viewers critically evaluate the credibility of what they see and hear, at times viewers receive a bad degree by what they see on TV; it is all negative and rarely positive. Television news has helped put a face on the issues that we have had over the years. Without the influence of television news we would not have a public opinion or be the nation we are today.

The Anticipation

Pretty much, this video project was just a clip that explained how anyone would feel on the morning of a big job interview. The motive of this video was to catch the attention of teenagers and adults. My goal was to show the audience the prerequisite steps before an interview with a little twist of humor. In order to create this video, I had to delete a couple of files from my cellular phone in order to record. I had a friend of mine record my every action. Before I completed this project, I went through rough takes that lasted 2hrs lol. I used my cellular device and a video app called "Perfect video", and through these two devices, I created this clip.

My schedule is rough throughout the week, so the day when the assignment was due, I completed it. I also used Instagram's video editing as well in order to do 15 second clips and when I was finished I combined them all together. At first I thought it was a silent video project, but when I came in class, everybody had music. This made me kind of nervous, so at that very moment I went on my App Store & bought Pharells Happy song from Despicable Me 2. I attached it to the clip on my perfect video editor and it fit perfectly. I had fun while doing this assignment & I felt as if I added my own creative twist to it in order for it to come out as smooth as it did. The Anticipation says it all. Hopefully, as you watch this clip, you will enjoy and might even relate towards it. Enjoy :)

Viacom Thoo.

Have you noticed that when a person watches TV, there are similar programs on multiple channels? It is because of venture capitalism. Venture capitalists are investors that provide money to start up businesses with a long potential growth, especially in media. There are parent companies such as Time Warner, Viacom, and Tribune, but the only one that stands out the most is Viacom. Viacom streams more than 160 channels of entertainment. Viacom networks channels that a person watches on a daily basis include: Bet, TV Land, Spike TV, CMT, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, MTV, and VH1. In this blog, I will elaborate on the company Viacom, why some people like it, and the success of the company.

Viacom (Video and Audio Communications) is an American global mass media company. “ Viacom is home to the world's premier entertainment brands that connect with audiences through compelling content across television, motion picture, online and mobile platforms in over 160 countries and territories". ("Who owns the," 2012), the company is worth $14.9 billion. Viacom streams major entertainment channels such as: BET, MTV, and VH1. Viacom’s products are cable television, broadcasting, radio publishing, movies, and web portals. Being a mass media company, it is known for being a successful result of venture capitalism.

In society, people watch Tv and use other products for entertainment. Every TV show that a person watches on a daily basis, is usually filled with comedy, laughter, or drama. The company that produces these tv shows are Viacom. People love Viacom because Viacom airs their favorite shows. Behind the scenes of Viacom, you can also receive a job at the company. According to a company review from a manager in financial services. “Viacom is a great company to work and grow at, as long as you’re in the right group”. “Viacom gives great pay, plus there service is perfect”. Viacom offers great benefits; they have potential especially in growth. According to the companies website, Viacom’s global practice states “Viacom strives to maintain a work environment that upholds the highest standards of business behavior. Our company values individuals who are ethical, work smart and share the dedication and passion that have made Viacom the success it is today and are crucial for continued long-term success” -Viacom. With this company being on the rise in media, the more money they will receive because of their work, there business approach, and products.
Throughout the years, Viacom has made its company popular and successful; whether it’s through cable production, broadcasting, radio publishing, movies, and web portals. Viacom stands out to a person’s eye. Their success did not come overnight; Viacom worked hard to grab viewer’s attention and also take over the media by storm. The reason why Viacom grabs people’s attention is because “people are at a constant demand for receiving good quality content. This demand is not just coming from cable and broadcasting networks but also from streaming companies that are increasingly looking to acquire original content. ” –Trefis. Another additional point to their success is what they stream on TV; on a daily basis, viewers consume “13.2% of Nickelodeon, 8.2% of MTV, 3.8% of Vh1, and 59.6% of Spike TV, Bet, etc”. Viewers love shows that are entertaining; those three channels stream that category every day. Examples such as: Love and Hip Hop, Teen Wolf, Fairly Odd Parents, Spongebob Squarepants, Bad Girls Club, Catfish, Teen Mom, 16 and Pregnant, True Life, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and the list goes on. Viewers tune in to catch all of these shows on the day of viewing, therefore the channel views of Viacom are on a high scale.

As a venture capitalist, Viacom stands out from other parent companies because of its structure, business approach, and its success in the media industry. There are other companies such as Time Warner, and Tribune, but on the other hand Viacom receives more attention by viewers and other media just by what they stream on TV. Viacom strives to uphold the highest standards of business behavior in there every action; whether it is through a job that they offer, or contracts to allow certain programs to run through their corporation. Viacom stands for perfection. Without their corporation, people’s favorite shows would never be aired.

Parents Concern .. Ouuuuu

There are many concerns that parents have towards their kids self-being and growth. What they must do? How they should react? What they must watch? There are numerous of questions and concerns of parents in this generation that I have been willing to ask. So in order to do that, I interviewed my friend’s mom (Katherine). The main questions I focused on are the concerns of what their kids are watching? What media products do they consider good or healthy; and what are the reprimanding options you use to fix it? The interview went as followed…
When it comes to the media: television. There are plenty of channels and shows that people watch; mainly children and adults. Most shows that come on range towards that age span. Interviewing Katherine, I asked, “What shows are you concerned about your daughter watching?” She replied saying, “There are many shows that I am concerned about my daughter watching, but the main ones that catch my attention are cartoons after 8:00 preferably Cartoon network’s: Adult Swim. I can watch that station because it’s entertainment to me, but when it comes to my daughter; the shows that come on are not appropriate for her age. They are full with violence, crude sex jokes, and inappropriate dialogue. They can influence her in so many ways, and I am not trying to have that”. Hearing a parent say that, brought thoughts to my mind. It is true, after that time cartoons are considered for adult entertainment. They have no positive influence on kids at their young age. Kids are known to be quick to catch on to what they see or hear. So Cartoon Network’s: Adult Swim, is a no go.

Media offers so many products known to be good and bad. McDonalds are known to offer healthy foods compared to back then. They have orange juice, vegetables, apples, fruit cups, etc… Before all they had was greasy foods until the movie “Supersize Me” brought attention to corporate levels as well as lawsuits; they changed from there and also eliminated the “Supersize” option. I therefore asked Katherine, “What media products offer good influence to your children?” Katherine replied, “Well, my child loves the learning CD-ROM games, and to be honest. I love them as well. They teach my daughter math, spelling, language arts, and speaking. My daughter absolutely loves it, plus it isn’t boring. Ever since I bought the learning CD, my daughter has excelled in her subjects at school.” Media does offer good products, especially when it comes to learning.
In society, we all know the reprimanding options that parents use in order to fix their kids that they can grow good instead of bad. We all started off young and were not foreign to some of the options. I asked Katherine, “what are your reprimanding options do you give your daughter whenever she does something wrong?” Katherine said, “There are many options that I use such as belt beating, taking away Ayla’s favorite show (Dora), spanking, etc... Parents know what is best at times, even though kids get rowdy at times. They have options and she shaped her child by doing so.
Overall, there are many concerns that parents have towards their kids self-being and growth. What they must do? How they should react? Or what they must watch? Media is known to be essential in society and humans are glued to the media. It is up to the parents in order to shape their children in ways that most kids will not understand. Every parent has their different views and reasons to their action.

Media Literacy..

Media and communication technologies play a huge part in the recreational and professional aspects of today’s society. Every day, people find ways to innovate messages and ideas in order to appeal to others. This enhances society as it exposes concepts previously ignored or misunderstood encouraging open-mindedness in considering and supporting them as a result. This is the main purpose of media literacy as it encourages people to be analytical and creative in ways that produce a wide range of messages using image, language, and sound. In addition, media literacy encourages others to become critical thinkers and learn to question the bias in information received; therefore, being more active in media culture is important as it leads to a more enlightened and progressive nation.

Furthermore, the development of media in the past years is remarkable. Initially, literacy was centered on reading and writing. This all changed though as the Information Age came along with many innovations such as movies, social media, computers, and cell phones. One can hold a device that connects them to the world in the palm of their hands. It is also important to note that through the great technological accomplishments made in fields such as healthcare, the quality of many lives are lengthened and overall improved. The importance of media literacy is to provide a form of defense from information provided obtaining bias and faulty facts. Therefore, the tendency of one to not question the information they’re provided is highly discouraged by media literacy.
Roles such as parenting become enhanced when media literacy is involved. This is because the millennial generation otherwise known as Generation Y have access to all that is out there and without proper training in media literacy, it will be hard to keep them protected. Studies have shown that most infants are able to play computer games and navigate through touch screen devices before they are capable of walking and talking. This proves that it is imperative to question which methods would be best to maximize benefits and minimize potential harm caused by the media-saturated world we live in today.
Moreover, the importance of media literacy also affects one in the professional aspect of their life. Many have recognized the importance of media literacy in the workplace. These advancements lead to economic growth and an overall increase in human capital. In addition, media literacy allows regular individuals to possess marketing skills that were unheard of years ago. This becomes possible because media literacy teaches consumers how to differentiate between news and propaganda. The constant flow of unique techniques that involve public relations and advertising that the average person is exposed to through media. It gives them an awareness of the false advertisements and plethora uses of manipulation that is out there. This awareness allows them to better protect and promote themselves professionally.
Subsequently, the world we're living in today is becoming more dependent on technology every day. The advances being made are changing society on a whole. Looking into the future, having media literacy will become imperative for further elevation. Without it, one cannot be properly prepared to navigate through the constant ideals and pressures presented by media. Even a person who isn't "tech savvy" and refrains from excessive use of technology will be presented with countless forms of media in their everyday life. Whether in the workplace or just through seeing billboards on the side of the road, one simply can't escape the prominent presence of media. Becoming media literate will provide one with skills that will only better them in the future. Truly, the only question to ask oneself when considering media literacy is, "Why not?"
